Dev Catalyst Alumni Spotlight: Steven Dew

I met Steven Dew this summer during his internship with Sodium Halogen, here at theCO. Steven is a sophomore at MTSU, majoring in computer science. While completing his internship for Sodium Halogen, he was also building a website for Main Street Connections to sharpen up his skills and beef up his portfolio of work.

Steven had taken the Dev Catalyst coding course all four years of high school, and during his junior year, he got to go on the trip to San Francisco, an experience that was exciting for him. “The amount of doors that Dev Catalyst will open is amazing and it may completely reshape your life plan.” He said, “Even if a student may think it is boring or nerdy, I would say give it a chance.” He was first introduced to theCO through the program, “I remember bringing my project into theCO for a Help Night with Christen Harper and a few others. I was working on a remote-controlled t-shirt cannon using a Raspberry Pi. They said that they liked my project and that it was very out of the box. I remember that they taught me a ton about how to actually make the motors work properly for the project and gave me a bunch of good ideas to improve.”

Steven’s plan is to focus on becoming a full stack developer, with an interest in freelance work and potentially entrepreneurship within the field. “I really like the idea of being able to grow with your work and build something of your own.” Working with Sodium Halogen was an incredibly positive and eye-opening opportunity for Steven, “I remember the first week was a little overwhelming and I knew I was definitely not where I needed to be in terms of being able to help and properly understand what was going on.” he said, but with guidance and support from the SH team, it became clear to Steven that this was exactly when kind of thing he wanted to continue to do in the future as a career. Seeing passions and career paths align for someone is exciting, “I would go home every night and study for a couple of hours.” He was and is determined to learn as much as he can.

You can keep up with Steven via LinkedIn or check out his latest work on GitHub, (stevend2002) which he is continuing to update.
