Dev Catalyst Alumni Spotlight: Nicholas Weiner
Nicholas Weiner is a Dev Catalyst alumnus and went on the San Francisco trip back in 2017. As of 2021, he is a rising senior at UT Knox with a major in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Environmental Science. Last summer, he had a Co-op with Bayer Industries, where he was involved in building a stronger digital infrastructure in the manufacturing area for data integrity. His role included assisting with editing Standard Operating Procedures with respect to the change in plant ownership, working on SAP, Actuation Projects, and Validation Assistance.”
One of the major aspects of the Dev Catalyst experience that stuck with him was the professional development portion of the San Francisco trip. He remarked at how valuable it was to be able to have your LinkedIn profile created and those connections made while you were on the trip. “Getting to see Silicon Valley was an absolute privilege,” he said, “it was a very eye-opening experience.” On his trip, the group toured Facebook, LinkedIn and Google.
Besides the ultimate goal of the San Francisco trip, Nicholas urges anyone considering Dev Catalyst to go ahead and do it. “Coding applies to engineering regardless of what kind, and gives you a baseline understanding going into learning other systems.”
Currently while studying at UTK, he is also an undergrad research assistant (working with Anaerobic Digestion Bioreactors to study microbial culture behavior and byproducts at different conditions) and laboratory tech (partnered with professor In Eastman Unit Operations Lab to design Senior level Chemical Engineering lab experiments.)
