CO.STARTERS Spotlight: Margaret Byrd and Overcoming Fears as a Business Owner

“A friend told me, ‘do it afraid.’ Just do it even if you’re scared,” said Margaret Byrd, owner of Blue Byrd Marketing.

This has become her motto as a small business owner since the beginning of January 2022. And I think this could be a motto for any part of our lives. To do the hardest thing even if it’s scary because maybe that’s what is best for us. Maybe what’s best for us causes fear at first, but reaps a reward in the end.

Byrd quit her full time job in December of 2021 and decided to dive head first into owning her own social media marketing company called Blue Byrd Marketing. She graduated from Union University in 2019 with her bachelor’s degree in marketing and graduated in 2020 with her master’s in marketing. Although she worked for a marketing company right out of college, her dream was always to own her own business where she helps clients figure out their goals for social media. Now she does this through determining whether the client’s goal is engagement or followers, then, she creates content and monitors how it performs, and adapts the content for the future.

“I guess one day I was just like, I’m just doing this, both feet in. And I took the plunge,” said Byrd. “And then I got started and was like I have no idea how to run a business, so once I got into CO.STARTERS it gave me a blueprint for what my business should look like.”

She enrolled in CO.STARTERS and was able to create actionable steps for her business. She figured out how to practically accomplish the vision she had in her mind. She began in January 2022 with only one client, fearful of the whole idea crashing down, and in just six months, she had 20 clients all around the country.  Her business really began to expand and grow just as she had hoped.

“One of the really cool things about CO.STARTERS is it put me in an environment with people who were like minded,” said Byrd. “Especially as someone who is 25, it’s not often that I have people my age that are business owners or who are goal oriented in that way. So, I think it’s cool to be around other people who are also very driven and want to create something of their own.”

Being a business owner can be lonely and difficult, but being a young business owner has challenges of its own. CO.STARTERS was an encouragement to Byrd as she began her business and was doubtful if it would last. But let Margaret Byrd’s story be an encouragement to you, whether it's taking the leap into owning your own business, having a community of hard working, goal oriented people around you, or conquering that fearful situation.
